With resources for energy quickly declining, climates changing around the world, more people are looking at renewable energies for reducing their carbon footprint. Even the most environmentally responsible person cannot always purchase alternative energy resources for the home due to the costs. The costs for a professionally installed solar energy system can be in the thousands, so many practical people are researching the resources available to build their own solar energy systems.

It's possible to build your own panel, but these panels may be small and not produce the watts needed to power more than a single lamp for only a couple minutes. The best way to use the power of the sun, when the costs for a professional are more than you can afford, would be with a solar kit. A do-it-yourself solar panel kit comes with everything you need to build your solar panel in your living room, although the garage might be a better choice.

Actually, do-it-yourself solar panel kits are easy to find. Companies like GE produce these kits, the solar panel kits are affordable and give a faster return on your investment over having a professionally installed solar energy system. The instructions for the kits are easy to follow, and it does not take long to have your solar kit up and running.

If you want to build your own solar panel there are lots books and guides available to help you put one together. If you get the whole family involved in building it, every one will learn how a solar power system works and exactly how the components are put together. Also, when you build the solar kit on your own you give yourself the knowledge to expand your system in the future if wish to do so without having to rely on hiring a professional.

Make your own homemade solar panel and gain the education of learning how these systems work and in the process save money while helping the environment.

You Can Build Your Own Solar Water Heater

If you could make your own solar water heater that would reduce some of your energy costs and would put you one step towards building a solar power system for the whole home.

Build Your Own Solar Water Heater

If you have ever opened a car that’s been closed up and sitting in the sun you know how much heat is in there. Using the same principle as that is how you can heat up your water. Although you would have to have a solar collector and holding tank for the water.

The solar collector would be working to heat the water that flowed through it. The collector is usually a box like fixture with the water lines running through it. A plate painted black at the bottom of the box would absorb the suns energy and heat up, the box would have a glass cover that would act like the cars windows and intensify and hold the energy inside.

The solar collector would be best used facing to the south unless you live really close to the equator in which case it would be pointed more up. In the winter you should still be able to heat your water unless you live in an area with a lots of freezes. In that case you would have to use an active solar heater with a pump to circulate the water. A passive system has no moving parts and relies on the principle of hot water flowing up and the cooler water staying lower.

You can build your own solar hot water heater with not much difficulty if you had a set of plans. You can find used parts or scrounge parts to use for assembly. Building your own solar heater would be fun to do and it would reduce your energy costs. For something on a smaller scale you could build one for an outdoor shower.

You Can Make Your Own Alternative Energy System
By Josh Stevens

If you are thinking of trying to install some alternative energy sources into your home you are probably thinking of solar power or windmills. If you are a do-it-yourself type you can easily build something yourself working off of a set of plans. You could go out and buy a system already pre-assembled and ready to go, but you would be paying a lot more than you would if doing it on your own.

You are probably thinking of reducing your energy costs and thinking of which way you go with an energy saving source. If you are thinking of solar power you could go for powering the whole house or using it for running some appliances. There are a couple types of solar power you can use. You could assemble collection panels to charge batteries or use passive solar heat for heating water.

If you are thinking of wind power, is your location a good place for taking advantage of the wind? If you are located where the wind is blocked or there just are not strong enough winds that blow you may have to forget this plan. Not having enough wind may not generate enough electricity to make it worth it. If you decide to proceed with your windmill, you can find some decent plans for building it yourself.

If you can build a energy saving system to provide electricity to your home you will make a savings on your energy bill. You may be able to be self-sustaining if you build a large enough system

Installing a Solar Water Heater at Home

Build your own solar power system in your home and save on your energy bill and save on the cost of hiring a professional.

Install a Solar Water Heater in Your Home
By Josh Stevens

Installing a solar water heater in your home or vacation home can be a real energy saver and it's kind of fun creating your own hot water without relying on electricity. Building a solar heater is not that difficult and will cut back on your electric bill enough to make it worth it. If you shop and hunt around you can get the parts at reasonable costs and it will pay for itself pretty quick.

Depending on where you live geographically, there would be a specific style of water heater you would build. There are currently over 300,000 water heaters installed around the United States and thousands more installed every year. You can buy systems already built and ready to go into the home or if you feel up to it you could build your own. With a set of plans and instructions a solar water heater can be built by someone with basic do-it-yourself skills.

There are two common types of water heaters, the passive solar heater and the active solar water heater. The active heater uses a circulator pump and a temperature control. The passive solar water systems do not have any moving parts but rely on the principle that heat rises and cold falls. In the passive system the hot water will rise up through the system and the cooler water will stay lower down. The passive system also comes in two styles called the batch & thermosyphon and the active systems all operate pretty much the same.

How Does A Wind Mill Work?

If you want to save on your energy bill and help the environment check out alternative energy sources. It's kind of fun getting your own electricity from the sun and wind and not becoming dependent on the grid.

How Does a Windmill Operate?
By Josh Stevens

Windmills have been around for a long time for things like pumping water from a well and grinding grains. The windmill simply takes advantage of the wind that is generated by the sun heating the surface of the earth unevenly. There are hot and cooler spots that form on the earth and at the hot spots the air moves up and the cooler air fills in behind it causing wind.

Windmills are designed to take advantage of the wind by it's ability to rotate or turn the blades of the windmill which cause a drive shaft to turn. To take advantage of the windmills ability to make electricity, the drive shaft will turn a generator to produce the electricity.

Two different kinds of windmills you may find are the Horizontal Axis Turbine and the Vertical Axis Turbine. The most common type are the horizontal axis turbine, these are the ones you see on ranches in the movies and what you see in Holland.

The only drawback to using a windmill is that you need wind to operate it, so when the wind is not cooperating you must have a backup source of electricity. This could be in the form of solar power or you may still be connected to the power grid.

The wind turbines as they are called are getting much more proficient at producing electricity and the price has been going down also. If you consider yourself a handyman you can build yourself a windmill for less than buying a ready-made one. Plans are easy to find and parts are not difficult to get.

Solar Water Heater Basics

Making your own solar hot water system is not that hard to do and can be done by DIY people. With a set of plans you would have the means to accomplish it.

Basics of a Solar Water Heater
By Josh Stevens

The oldest method of making hot water with the sun is probably the passive solar hot water systems. Back in the early 1900's they could be seen on roofs of homes mostly in the warmer areas of the country.

Today they are still a very popular way to use the sun to heat water. Passive systems have no moving parts only the holding tank for the water which is usually in a box with a glass front to take in and hold the heat. The holding container is painted black to absorb the heat from the sun.

Think of the inside of your car on a hot sunny day, you can see how it could get pretty warm in the box. Even in the winter your car can warm up inside when the sun is up so making hot water in the winter with a passive water heater is possible in some places. Your major concern in the winter is your water freezing in the pipes. For this reason you hay want to keep the pipes as short as possible.

The kind of temperatures you can get from a passive solar water heater can vary depending on the amount of sun, air temperature, insulation and the temperature of the water feeding into the heater. Under best conditions you might expect a temperature of up to 180 degrees by the afternoon. If you use a lot of hot water in the morning or early in the day, the heater should warm up more water by the afternoon.
